I'll never forget the moment I met the love of my life.
The morning you were born, your unprepared parents were running around like a bad keystone cops routine. 5 a.m....water broke...no gas in the car...power outage...packing suitcase by candlelight...burning hands with hot wax...rush hour traffic.
You arrived just a few hours later. You were so calm and composed and serious, and I was overwhelmed by the "youness" of you. You sized me up with your sharp eyes, as if to say, "so...YOU are going to be taking care of me? What kind of training have you had? Do you have references?"

From the first minute of your life, you seemed like you could be an adult. Like as soon as they cut the cord you were going to go down to the gift shop and buy a cigar and a Wall Street Journal and move on with your life.
But you didn't. You have stayed with us all this time, allowing us to parent you and restrict you and make you go to bed on time. Every once in a while, though, I see the 40 year old in you saying, "Again, what are your qualifications, lady?"

I must have passed your test somewhere along the way...or maybe you decided that since I had access to a car and could turn on the stove, you'd better stick with me for a while...because we've had a great eleven years together.

Your mature soul is one of the gentlest I've ever met. You are sweet and steady and soft inside. And a person doesn't have to say much for you to understand implicitly what they're getting at. AND you have a great sense of humor.
It's the fabulous "youness" that has been there since your very first minute.

And while I know that turning eleven doesn't come with any of the adult privileges you're yearning for, I want you to know that I'm so proud of you for being you for this many years.
Happy Birthday, lovebug.

Happy Birthday Theo! You're "youness" has infected our lives forever and we love you for it. We remember the day you were born waiting for the overnight mail with the first pictures of you and loving you the moment we laid our eyes on you. We celebrate your life. Have a great birthday and a great year!
